Five Reasons Why We Love DJ Sbu

By Jeanette Ramolula

“I am from a generation that is sick and tired of being sick and tired.” These words were said on an advert by a man who has shown, without a doubt that he is truly sick and tired. This millionaire has went from being a kwaito star, a TV presenter, an entrepreneur, a producer, a house music and a radio DJ to being what we define as a philanthropist by serving and giving back to the community. He goes by the name of Sibusiso Leope also known as DJ Sbu and here are five reasons why we love him:

1.      Music: Sibusiso Leope, also known as Sbuda or commonly known as DJ Sbu, was born on the 28th of May 1977. This young artist was believed to be Mzekezeke although he never really admitted to this. Mzekezeke performed with the likes of the late Brown Dash, Izinyoka, DJ Cleo,  and many others. Back in 2003, Mzekezeke was awarded for Artist and Song of the year respectively for ‘S’guqa Ngamadolo’ at the South African Music Awards (SAMAs). DJ Sbu has continued to produce a number of successful solo albums under his name, making him one of the most respected commercial and afro-house deejays in the country.

2.      Radio and TV: DJ Sbu started school in Welamlambo Primary School, matriculated in 1993 at Central Secondary School in Pretoria then studied Sound Engineering at African Media University. His career in radio and TV was sparked in 1988 for voluntary work at a community radio station namely Thembisa Info Radio. For 18 months with persistence, he presented and produced a popular weekend show. DJ Sbu became very popular in 2000 when he produced and presented a weekend show called Beauty and the Beast on YFM. He is currently on Metro FM hosting the Sound Revival Reloaded show.

DJ Sbu then expanded his wings by moving to television where he presented a talent search youth show titled Gumba Fire which was broadcasted on SABC 1. He is currently hosting a popular television game show called Friends Like These where he was awarded the first South African to host a TV show for ten successful years.

3.      Entrepreneurship: DJ Sbu is not only a talented TV personality but also a very successful entrepreneur. He is the co-owner of a recording company with TK Nciza, TS Records, and this company has signed many talented artists including the likes of award winning artist, Zahara, who took South Africa by storm in 2011 with her album Loliwe. He is also the Co-founder and Executive Chairman of a number of businesses he owns under the Blaque Gemini. He is currently involved in another business venture that has inspired thousands of youth across the country. He has created the  first ever locally produced energy drink called MoFaya.

4.      SLEF: DJ Sbu changed the youth’s mentality and perspective by motivating them to break down boundaries even if one is from a disadvantaged background. He is the founder and Chairman of SLEF (the Sibusiso Leope Education Foundation) which has given away 347 bursaries to learners throughout 300 schools in the whole of South Africa. He is a firm believer of education as he is also currently studying for his MBA. He also supports and mentors sixteen young people across the country.

5.      Leadership 2020: This 37 year old philanthropist has also proven to be a man with determination and many talents, one of them being an author of the best-selling motivational book titled “Leadership 2020: The Beginning”. The book is aimed to positively inspire young South Africans to embrace the spirit of entrepreneurship and also not to let their circumstances affect their determination in life.DJ Sbu is indeed a successful young man that has broken the boundaries, proving that all is possible through hard work, passion and faith. He stands today as one of the youngest millionaires and has been selected as one of the 100 Most Influential Africans alongside Nelson Mandela, Thabo Mbeki and Desmond Tutu. His name has become a formidable brand and his achievements speak for themsleves.

DJ Sbu is  an inspiration to many and he has showed that he is from a record changing generation that is sick and tired of being sick and tired indeed. For all these reasons and more, that is why we love DJ Sbu.
