Jackie Queens Celebrates Womanhood in New Single

By Molebogeng Mangoale

Cape Town based vocalist and songwriter Jackie Queens has teamed up with talented singers, Bonj Mpanza and Deslynn Malotana for a collaboration track in celebration of womanhood.

Released on Women’s Day, GIRLS came as a result of a heated conversation Queens had with her family about her youngest sister having to dress ‘modestly’ to avoid being raped. “It wasn’t the first time but for some reason I was very angry that day. I just kept thinking something as simple and innocent as wanting to look good for yourself at 12 years old can be twisted in such a way,” she says.

The inspiration behind this song speaks to the reality which many young women are faced with, having to deal with scrutiny about the way in which they dress. We salute artists like Queens, Mpanza and Malotana for raising such issues through music. As Women’s month comes to an end, we can only hope that this song will create more awareness about the fact that society’s policing of how women behave or dress will never justify gender based violence against them and how in fact, it perpetuates rape culture further.

Produced by young rising talent Enoo Napa, the song was recorded in partnership with Red Bull Studios in Cape Town.  It is a celebration of womanhood, self-love and of course GIRLS!
